Stewardship Opportunities

Trout Lily thrives because of its community spirit. We use a stewardship model as a replacement for a traditional board or PTA. All positions are volunteer based.  We have established three stewardship teams: Finances, Facilities and Families that meet on a regular basis.  Additionally, we have In-Classroom Volunteer opportunities reading, special projects, and more. Chat with one of our Teacher Leaders for details.

Community Stewardship

At Trout Lily our relationship with our community is very important. By tending to our community through our stewardship program we hope to instill in our students a sense of love and responsibility for the places we inhabit and interact with. Stewardship for us means taking on a variety of tasks both urban and wild. We tend to our neighborhood garden, collect litter from the blocks around our school and in our nature spaces, we tap maple trees, organize projects that beautify our public spaces, and foster relationships with the people who live all around us; in our wild spaces we work to remove invasive plants like honeysuckle and johnson grass. Once the invasives are removed, native plants are fostered and allowed to flourish - from this work we chose our name "Trout Lily" after the wildflowers that bloomed when given the love and space they need.

Maple Tapping

Trout Lily students, under the guidance of Erin, our Neighborhood Stewardship leader, tap maple trees all throughout our neighborhood. This includes trees in the yards of our neighbors, Lydia's House, and our teachers. We also have several trees tapped in what we call the "sugar bush" down in lower Millcrest. Throughout the season we collect the maple and sap, culminating in the process of cooking it down into syrup. When the dandelions bloom again we enjoy dandelion pancakes with our homemade maple syrup.
